With a very rich network of natural spaces, with its contours, water courses and remarkable biodiversity, Franche-Comté protects and cultivates its natural resources. Industrial activity was set up and developed in this region thanks to
the presence of wood and water. 

Due to energy costs, securing supplies, climate change and protecting the environment, in Franche-Comté awareness of the necessity to preserve and diversify energy sources has led to the implementation of uncompromising
policies in favour of energy saving and renewable energy sources. 

Drawing on local teaching facilities and the industrial fabric, research in
Franche-Comté is coordinated with the Vehicle of the Future and Microtechnology competitive clusters, as well as the joint fuel cell laboratory FC-LAB to work on projects concerning metrology and instrumentation, as well as multiphysics and multi-scale modelling of energy phenomena.
