Microtechnology

Microtechnology: the product of watchmaking expertise

 Microtechnology, miniaturisation and accuracy
Silmach - © L. CHEVIET Microtechnology is the product of watchmaking expertise that has developed in Franche-Comté since the eighteenth century. The quartz revolution in the 1970’s led firms to seek new markets.
Firms in Franche-Comté began to apply their expertise in accuracy and miniaturisation by constantly pushing back technical and technological limits to the ultimate scale.
Small and medium-sized microtechnology firms develop components and products that are used worldwide by major hi-tech companies.

Health microtechnology

 Advanced health technology
Polissage Gaidot - © L. CHEVIET For development and innovation, Franche-Comté has specific technology resources that bring together all disciplines. Ever smaller, more accurate and more intelligent…with even more functions…nanotechnology is the future…

Firms with expertise in various fields, such as precision mechanisms, automatic controllers/robotics, computers, electronics, engineering and plastics processes, are located near engineering design offices, university laboratories, hospitals and universities...so that significant resources can be mobilised to provide innovative responses for developing medical devices.

Brought together as part of the microtechnology cluster, the firms provide tailor-made solutions in the fields of medical devices, instruments and imaging as well as equipment for the pharmaceutical industry and telemedicine.

Training

Institut Supérieur d’Ingénieurs de Franche-Comté - ISIFC
Trains engineers for the biomedical industry and treatment centres. It is the only one of its kind in France and rare in Europe
Created in 2001, ISIFC is an engineering school accredited by the Ministry of Education and the Commission des titres d’ingénieur (CTI). It offer unique training which responds to the real need for engineers working in the interface between science and medicine.

National Engineering Institute in Mechanics and Microtechnologies - ENSMM
The only school in France dedicated to microtechnology. It offers a major in microsystems and health and an apprenticeship in engineering.

>> ENSMM - further information

University of Technology Belfort-Montbeliard - UTBM
Accelerated training of engineers who can easily adapt to changes in technology and society.

Innovation

Organised research
FEMTO - © L. CHEVIET The undeniable power of microtechnology lies in combining scientific disciplines and technology to produce ever more intelligent interfaces.
  • FEMTO-ST: the institute has several technology platforms for microfabrication, mechanical characterisation, electronics and liquid measurement.
  • LIFC: Franche-Comté’s information technology laboratory.
  • LERMPS: The Laboratory for Study and Research of Materials, Processes and Surfaces develops deposit techniques during the vapour phase, thermal projection and microfabrication with laser fusion of powders.
All are supported by the Microtechnology Competitiveness Cluster.

Microtechnology Cluster

The competitiveness cluster has created a medical commission which supports the development of firms in the field. The clear objective is to pursue research and innovation in the medical field as well as to develop an overall multidisciplinary technology programme to respond to the needs of leading international firms. The medical commission helps firms to enter and develop their business in the medical sector.
