Defended by France, the work of the military engineer has been adopted by Unesco as cultural icons. The twelve sites adopted represent the diversity of the work of Vauban (1633-1707), the grand master of the art of laying siege to and defending towns.
It is Besançon, with its citadel, its walled city and the Griffon fort (Doubs) that has brought together all the following sites around the project: the pentagonal citadel of Arras (Pas-de-Calais), the Blaye-Cussac-Fort-Médoc forts (Gironde), the walled city, the forts and the Asfeld bridge at Briançon (Hautes-Alpes), the gilded tower of Camaret-sur-Mer (Finistère), the new town of Longwy (Meurthe-et-Moselle), the Mont-Dauphin fort (Haut-Alp), the Mont-Louis citadel (Pyrénées-Orinetales), the stronghold of Neuf-Brisach (Haut-Rhin), the citadel of Saint-Martin-de-Ré (Charente-Maritime), the coastal towers of Tatihoud-Sint-Vaast-la-Hougue (Manche), and the walled precinct and forts of Villefranche-de-Conflent (Pyrénées-Orinetales).
